Module 6

Yippee, this means the semester is almost over.  Wow, I really learned alot in this Module 6.  Health information and personal health information is very important to every individual, so we must be very careful when accessing other individuals information.  Safeguarding and protecting one's personal health information and electronic medical record should be our number one priority when accessing the information.

I do not care how many times I have to take HIPPA classes, it is never enough.  We seem to forget quickly why it is important and how easily personal health information can be compromised if we don't safeguard the information.  I enjoyed the Citi.org modules and I know some people think it is boring, but it is important especially in this day and age of informatics.

Thank you, I really enjoyed this class.

Module 6

Hello all,
Again, I have learned so much from this module about clinical decision making.  I hope it doesn't leak out.  The readings and the assignment gave me the opportunity to learn new software and technology.  I am really excited about the TheraDoc program.  Evidence-based information right at our finger tips.  I think using clinical decision support interventions improves communication to the whole team which includes the physician, NP, nurse, dietician, caregivers, and patient. "Brokel states that clinical decision support provides the clinicians or patients with clinical knowledge and patient related information, intelligently filtered or presented at appropriate times, to enhance patient care (2009)."  So we will all be better informed and educated about the patient's needs and expectations of their healthcare experience.

Module 4

Teaching in technology has came along way, especially in educating in healthcare.  In my professional role as a Registered Nurse, I use interpersonal communications, linquistics, body-kinestics, spacial-visual, logical-mathematical, and musical strengths to enhance my educating the staff about strategies to provide wellness and advocacy for the patients we serve.

I thought this site was very informational about PDAs.  Most younger healthcare professionals are using PDAs for patient management, general medical reference tools, and teaching opportunities for colleagues and patients. I would think the only downfall would be security of patient information, but I'm sure their are ways to secure the electronic medical record.

Module 3 Assignment

The Module 3 assignment really helped me gain insight in using PubMed.  The tutorials were excellent and I think Jean LeBear does a awesome job. Please let her know how much I appreciate all her tutorials.  She is very patient with students in learning new technology.  As a student at the U of U, I have gained a lot of insight and knowledge about searching the indexes in the Eccles library.  The databases offered in the library are very helpful in searching for evidence based research and I know that I will use them throughout my practice.
EndNote is an amazing software progam and I am able to keep my own library of resources that I can use in my future practice.  Information technology improves the access to research information and enable the practitioner to be informed about current healthcare information and the highest level of evidence such as random-controlled trials.

Module 2 Assignment

What is one way you could become involved in designing, selecting, evaluating. or implementing an information system in your workplace?

I like to use my outlook express email at my workplace. I work for a state facility, so it is hard to implement change. We use the program AVATAR for documenting in patients' charts and transcribing doctors orders. It's not a user friendly program, but it improvement from paper documentation. Our system does include checking alerts on medication interactions which might cause problems for the patient. I don't think alerts about initiating actions for examinations, immunizations, patient education, and laboratory tests are implemented in our program, but it could be something I could check into and maybe we could implement this into our program.

Introduction

Hello everyone,
This is my blog spot. Wow, technology has "come along way baby." My name is Lauri Morgan and I'm in the Distance Doctorate Family Nurse Practitioner program in my 3rd semester. I currently work in a acute psychiatric unit and even the State of Wyoming has electronic charting. I'm amazed because Wyoming is a little slow when it comes to technology. Sometimes I feel we still use the Pony Express for our mail. Even though technology is growly so swiftly, we have to remember our patients. Patients aren't like email or texting, we need to take care of their needs first and charting later. I have a hard time when nurses think they need to do their charting when their patient hasn't been taken care of. It's just one of my cliches when it comes to computer charting.
Nice to meet everyone,
Blogging off
